You’ll start in the Amazon, and end up taking in the splendor of Machu Picchu at sunrise. Along the way, you’ll encounter a glorious variety of flora and fauna.

Are you a birder, or interested in becoming one? This trip is for you. Peru is home to more than 1,800 bird species, including 45% of the world’s neo-tropical species, and on this trip, you’ll encounter more than your fair share of them.

The trip starts in Cusco and travels into one of Peru’s most diverse natural protected areas, Manu National Park. From there, you’ll make your way through various climate zones before reaching the Amazon basin.

The southern Peruvian Amazon is home to myriad bird species, many exclusive within the region. Watch Peru’s national bird, the cock-of-the-rock, perform its courtship ritual dance, it’s an unforgettable display!

You’ll then spend two days hiking the legendary Lares Trek through the Sacred Valley of the Incas. You’ll visit local villages, meet the people who live there, and get an authentic taste of traditional Andean life. Your trip reaches its final glory with a sunrise visit to, and guided tour of the one and only Machu Picchu.

Day 1 / 12

Day 1 : Cusco

After you arrive in Cusco, a representative of Valencia Travel Cusco will be waiting for you. We will pick you up in our private transportation and take you to your hotel, where you will spend the night. You will have a whole day to relax and enjoy the beauty Cusco has to offer. You will stay in this hotel or one of similar standard to this one:

Day 2 : Cusco 

This Amazonian adventure is designed just for bird watchers. With 18.5% of the world's bird species and 45% of all neo-tropical species, Peru is a birder's dream destination. The trip starts in Cusco and travels through various climate zones before reaching the Amazon basin. The southern Peruvian Amazon is home to a myriad of bird species, many exclusive within the region.

Leaving the city of Cusco, you will travel through a number of climate zones on the way to the Amazon basin. The southern Peruvian Amazon is home to hundreds of bird species, many of them endemic.  This unique trip will also introduce you to the Amazon’s animal and plant life, as well as taking you through the Sacred Valley of the Incas, where you will be able to experience traditional Andean life.

Day 3 / 12

Day 3 : Cusco – Paradise Lodge

After an early start departure from Cusco, we will travel through Andean landscapes composed of fertile valleys, high grasslands and rural communities. It is possible to spot highland birds such as the mountain caracara, Puna ibis and Andean flicker during this part of the trip. We will also pass pre-Inca Lupaca culture burial towers, before arriving at the picturesque colonial-era town of Paucartambo, which has been the gateway to the Manu forests since the Incas first explored this territory. Here you will have time to visit the charming local church and view the historic Carlos V Bridge. Leaving the village, we will continue as far as Acjanaco Pass (3,850 meters / 12,630 feet), the official entrance to Manu National Park, from where the road descends through Andean grasslands rich in birdlife, before reaching the cloud forest in the afternoon. This ecosystem is home to a wealth of flora and fauna and is the habitat of the cock-of-the-rock, crested and golden quetzal, blue-crowned motmot and gray-breasted mountain toucan, as well as butterflies, ferns and orchids. You will spend your first night of the trip in our comfortable Paradise Lodge (1,470 meters / 4,821 feet).

Day 4 / 12

Day 4: Paradise Lodge

During this trip we will pass plantations of manioc, papaya, pineapple and coca leaves. These forests are home to squirrel monkeys and brown capuchin monkeys, and there will be a chance to spot a variety of birdlife, including spix guans, plumbeous kites and black vultures. That evening, after our meal, there will be time to walk in the forest around the lodge, where you will be able to observe nocturnal fauna and listen to the many sounds of the forest.

Day 5 / 12

Day 5: Amazon Basin

Today we will experience one of nature’s most remarkable spectacles, as we make an early morning trip to a macaw and parrot clay lick. Here several species of parrots and macaws gather at mineral-rich riverbank clay deposits to feed, creating an incredibly colorful and noisy display. This is a chance to observe Cuvier’s toucans, red and green macaws, blue-headed parrots and other species, as they feed on the minerals essential to their digestive process. After witnessing this remarkable event, we will return to the lodge for breakfast. Today’s adventure will continue with a long, leisurely walk along forest trails in search of birdlife and other fauna, before we return to the lodge for a lunch consisting of typical regional dishes. In the afternoon, we will travel by boat to the port of Atalaya, where our vehicle will be waiting to take you back to the Paradise Lodge.

Day 6 / 12

Day 6: Paradise Lodge – Cusco

Your final day in the forest will begin with another chance to observe the male cock-of-the-rock perform its daily mating dance. After breakfast, we will board our private bus for the return trip to Cusco, on the road to Paucartambo. From this colonial period village, our route will follow the course of the Qenqomayo River to Colquepata, from where we will continue to the high pass at Apacheta (4,100 meters / 13,448 feet). From here we will descend into the Sacred Valley of the Incas, with time to stop along the way and enjoy the Andean scenery, with its traditional villages of weaver communities, llama herders and farmers. We will also pass the spectacular Inca archaeological site of Pisac during this day’s traveling, above the picturesque village of the same name, which is famous for its local market. In Cusco you will be transferred to your selected hotel accommodation.

Day 7: Cusco

Day 8: Lares Trek

We depart at 5:00am from Cusco and travel to the township of Ollantaytambo in the Sacred Valley of the Inca this ride takes 2 hours. Then, will drive for 30 more minutes to the trek start pint named Patakancha, a Quechua community, where people live very much like their Incan ancestors, in stone and adobe homes with thatch roofs. The locals weave much of their clothing, work the land with foot ploughs and live off their llamas and alpacas supplementing their income working as porters. We will visit the community and school. After the community visit, you will meet your trekking crew, your kit will be loaded and you will start your hike. As you leave the village, you will enjoy views of alpaca and llama herds grazing along the trail. The scenery is typical of the high Andes with ichu or high altitude grass as well as some polylepis trees. After about an hour and a half of ascent, the trail flattens and you reach Lake Ipsaycocha, a beautiful small lagoon. This afternoon, we cross our first high pass of Ipsaycocha pass at (4,600m / 15,456ft), the rest of your hike will be downhill towards the campsite (4,200m/13,780ft).

Day 9 / 12

Day 9: Huacahuasi - Lares Hot Springs

After breakfast, you begin to descend for about three hours until you reach the community of Huacahuasi. Today, the scenery will be different from yesterday filled with fields of potato, barley, quinoa and corn that are abundant here.

Many of the houses that we see in the small village of Huacahuasi, are built from stone and have thatched roofs. The people of this village produce beautiful colourful textiles. In the morning, we will

Learn about the weaving techniques and be able to admire some of their high quality ponchos, chullos (wool hats) and other garments.

A further walk of 2 to 3 hours will take you to the hot springs near the colonial village of Lares at 3400m, where we will set up camp. For those of you, who remembered to bring your swimwear, we will take a relaxing dip in the warm waters, which are famous for their healing powers. Feeling fully refreshed, we will have a dinner and spend the night.

Day 10 / 12

Day 10: Lares - Ollantaytambo - Aguas Calientes

Early in the morning, the bus will pick us up to the head of a short trail by the Totora Canyon for 2 hours. Our transportation will be waiting to take us down the valley to the Incan town of Ollantaytambo, where we will rest and have lunch. In the afternoon, we will catch a train to Aguas Calientes. This is a spectacular journey, which starts in the Quechua highlands and slowly descends to lush tropical vegetation as nearing Aguas Calientes. Total journey time by train is about 11⁄2 hours. We will spend the night in a hotel in Aguas Calientes. Where you'll no doubt enjoy the opportunity to soak in the hot springs!! We will call it an early night to prepare for your Machu Picchu visit, the following morning.

Day 11 / 12

Day 11: Machu Picchu

You will have breakfast in your hotel and then your guide will pick you up at 5:40am. You will take the bus up to majestic Machu Picchu to catch the sunrise and begin your walking tour (two hours) with your guide. After this, you can explore the mysterious city by yourselves. You will then meet your guide in Aguas Calientes by bus to have lunch and to receive your train tickets back to Cusco.

Wayna Picchu Mountain, which translated from quechua means Young Mountain. Located at 2,693 meters as part of the Andean foothills. Wayna Picchu is well known for being part of the most panoramic photos of Machu Picchu.

However, it can also be seen archaeological sites such as the Temple of the Moon, built in a natural cave. At the top of Wayna Picchu are small terraces and some buildings that were part of an astronomical observatory in addition to being a point of guardianship of the City. From where you can see the entire City of Machu Picchu including accesses and roads that surround it.

To ascend to the top you have to go a narrow, winding and steep road. The path includes sections with steps and stairs carved in live rock, the hike takes about 1 and a half hour, time that can vary according to the physical state of the person.

Please, leave enough time to catch your train. It is a 25-minute bus ride from Machu Picchu to Aguas Calientes and buses leave when they are full. Make sure you are at the train station in good time (20 minutes before scheduled train departure)

P.S: If you booked Wayna Picchu, we will climb up this mountain after guided tour in Machu Picchu. This is usually at 10:00am.

Day 12: Transfer Out, Bye Cusco
